Keaton said in March 2014 that this was the only sequel he was interested in making
Synopsis
After a family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia’s life is turned upside down when her teenage daughter Astrid accidentally opens the portal to the afterlife. Jenna Ortega, Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Justin Theroux, and Monica Bellucci share why filming Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice was an experience they’ll never forget. Tim Burton said he would only make this movie if Michael Keaton returned to reprise his role.

The film references the “French physicist”; Maria Sklodowska-Curie; she is actually one of the most famous Polish scientists in history, often considered second only to Copernicus.. Beetlejuice: I think Dostoyevsky said… Later, the damn… SPOILER: There is a dedication at the end credits to Bob the Skinner, who died in the film.. Lydia, still able to see ghosts, has had visions of Betelgeuse (Michael Keaton), which only intensify as she returns to the house
As a man who has a nine out of ten review for “Beetlejuice”; linked on this site, I can only report that I found this sequel to be a mess (though not totally). After the death of her father, Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) returns to her childhood home with her stepmother Delia (Catherine O’Hara), boyfriend Rory (Justin Theroux) and daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega). But Betelgeuse has its own problems, related to the return of his vengeful ex-wife Delores (Monica Bellucci), who has the ability to extract the remaining souls of the dead – and make them ‘dead dead.’'What. I found it very interesting that for years Burton and Keaton adamantly refused to commit to a sequel unless the story was right.
Almost single-handedly, Keaton makes the film passable
Then for this to be the one they progressed with, which feels more like a bundle of ideas tied together than an actual story. There are four main plots, two of which could have been exorcised (pun intended) in part or even completely without making much of a difference. It feels like they’re just there so there’s an excuse for certain actors to be in the movie. It’s also a bit too fond of recreating moments from the original, so there are two gags that are slight variations on the previous ones, and another song-and-dance possession scene that’s a powerful moment, but again, just a remix of the first movies.
They cleverly keep his character down for most of the film so that when he does appear he’s a breath of life, but it’s a jolt the film needs too often and I don’t think I found anything funny
As you can see from the score, despite how negative this review is, I wouldn’t say I didn’t like the movie overall – but it feels too close to being ' cash grabby’ sequel we could have had at any time in the last 30 years.
