Synopsis
Rebellious local teenager Clotaire falls in love with his schoolmate Jackie – but gang violence leads him down a darker, destructive path. Beating Hearts was the lowest-rated film in the main competition at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival from French and international critics. They complained that the film was too long, full of cliches and misogynistic, that it copied several classic American films, that the love story was not believable and that the two leads had no chemistry and were overshadowed by the two teenagers playing the younger versions of their respective characters. Several critics and regular moviegoers also questioned why this film was chosen for the main competition at Cannes when there were better films out of competition or in the supporting series that could have taken its place.

The Cannes Film Festival awards ceremony by Screen International took place in 2024. The jury rated this film 1.4 out of 4 stars, while the Cannes jury of Chaos Reign gave the film 0.9 out of 4 stars and the Ioncinema jury gave it 1.6 out of 5 stars. In Metacritic’s article on the best and worst films of Cannes 2024, Beating Hearts was the first film to be included in the list of “disappointments”. One of the characters wears a Rolex Daytona Ceramic in the 1990s, but the watch was only released in 2016.
What a pity!
I’ve been expecting a lot from this film for three months and I’m honestly very disappointed with the script because it’s very bad and boring. You don’t expect the story to finally be explained and happen like that because the tone was very good and there was a lot of potential for a top story like they love in the film industry. First of all, the tone of the script is great. They tried everything to make such a good story to excite the audience, but unfortunately the script writers achieved little with the way they handle the script…
The direction, the soundtrack, the acting, the light and the colors of the crew, these are only the good points
because the old time explaining childhood is nice but too long and boring because so much happened and it’s very useful for showing and explaining, 30 minutes to show the past would be great but 1 hour and 15 minutes is too long!!! You expect the film to be remade when you see the old children’s films about adults, well, nothing moves, it’s too slow, not so much action, then the main character could make amends for his old problems, take revenge on everyone who betrayed him, but he didn’t… I mean, with ideas the story would be better and I’m so disappointed that the dramatic scene wasn’t there enough, a real pity because it would have been a great story!!! And as for the script, the two main actors that we love only act together for 20 minutes, that’s not enough for a very long film of 2 hours and 40 minutes and a pity because we would have expected more moments with these two actors, a great pity …
because an alternative with some other ideas would have been great but that didn’t happen
of the film, also with the good acting of all the actors, but the really bad points are for me the very slow and too long script that ruined the film … Thank you Gilles Lelouche for your great direction but your scriptwriters and the different choices they made ruined the film, even if the story comes from a book and you can’t put the ideas you want …
