Jesus and Mary are a couple going through a difficult time in their relationship. However, they have just become parents. To shape their new life, they decide to buy a new coffee table. Featured in Half in the Bag: Top 10 Horror Movies (2024), Part 1 (2024). I recently rented the Spanish thriller The Coffee Table (2022) on Prime. The story is about a couple who have recently become parents and learn to work together. One day, the husband is left home alone to care for the newborn while the wife is out and comes home with guests for dinner. The husband has an accident and the night takes a dramatic turn. Directed by Caye Casas (Asylum: Twisted Horror and Fantasy Tales), the cast is David Pareja (Amigo), Estefanía de los Santos (Unit 7), Claudia Riera (Black Snow), and Josep Maria Riera (Asylum: Twisted Horror and Fantasy Tales). The plot of this film is wild and gripping. Events unfold quickly, and you find yourself squirming throughout the film, trying to imagine how someone would handle such a situation. The acting is superb, capturing the difficult situation perfectly. The settings and atmosphere are tense and haunting, with a constant feeling of an “elephant in the room” that only one character and the audience know about. When the reveal happens, it’s breathtaking. In summary, The Coffee Table is a unique, well-written, and even better executed horror thriller. It’s a slow burn, but a brilliant and tragic journey. I would rate it 8/10, and highly recommend it.
